Winter Riding How To
Winter riding isn’t just about braving the cold, but about gearing up smart. This is where the 3-layer system comes in. A base, mid, and outer layer helps you to build a system that traps heat, wicks moisture, and shields you from the elements.
The base layer is the first point of regulating your body heat, so it is important that your base wicks away moisture and retains heat.
What to look out for:
- Rapid Dry Tees: Wicks away body sweat
- Avoid Cotton: As the fibres hold on to moisture leaving you cold and damp
- Merino Wool: Designed to insulate effectively while keeping sweat at bay
The role of a mid-layer is to trap as much heat from your body as possible, while at the same time keeping as much of the outside air away from your body.
An ideal mid-layer will be: breathable, either of fleece or down material and will wick away moisture.
The outer layer is the finishing touch to your riding gear, the protective shield that stands between you and the elements.
Built from abrasion-resistant leather, adaptable textiles, or breathable mesh, these outer layers are engineered to absorb the impact of wind, rain, and road while keeping you comfortable and visible.
