Triumph Young Guns Blog #2

    Session #2 – 29 June, Loughborough University

How fit is a Young Gun?

Hot on the heels of our opening session on PR and sponsorship, the ‘test of strength’ at Loughborough University soon came around. Bright and early on the last Saturday in June, our ten bleary-eyed racers gathered at the country’s top sports science facility to learn about nutrition, sports psychology, injury avoidance and fitness from some of the UK’s top experts in their field.

While the morning focused on classroom based activities - looking at the importance of a balanced diet, a positive mind-set and a will to win - the spectre of the sports hall loomed large by noon, with the challenge of the bleep test, the plank and the stretch test (new for 2013).

While young scot Max Alexander came top in his group for the bleep test with a level 12.1 score, Matt Schilling from Howden trumped him with a 13.5 score in group two. Ex-gymnast Tom Booth-Amos from Newport came top in the punishing plank test with a time of 6mins 17seconds. He also topped the charts when it came to the new flexibility test, scoring 34.5

The day ended with a final session on training techniques without the need for gym equipment and a session on injury prevention and how to minimise time off the bike after an accident.

All in all, this was another great session, with all of the Young Guns showing a keen interest in all the topics covered during the day. Let’s see how much of this has been taken on board, when we retest their fitness levels at Donington Park on the 6th September.

Our next mentoring session will be on racecraft, with the guys from the Smiths Triumph Racing providing expert tuition on 19th July at Brand’s Hatch.

Best of luck to all the Young Guns!
