GEOFF AND COLIN'S AMAZING ADVENTURE COMES TO AN END

Journey’s end for Colin O’Carroll & Geoff Hill.

It was a bittersweet feeling for the team, waking up these last few mornings of the adventure: on the one hand looking forward to going home, to sleeping in their own beds and having all the old familiar things around them, and knowing that, as always, they would miss getting up every morning, putting all their stuff on a motorbike and riding off down the open road in the early morning sun, not having a clue what the day would bring.

The lastleg of the journey took them along the world’s longest straight road, the Nullarbor Plain which ends at a roadhouse at Caiguna.
Along the road a strange phenomenon was seen – various articles of attire hanging from dead trees.
One was covered in hats, another in what were once t-shirts but were now rags, yet another in what appeared to be women’s underwear. Yet another mystery of the Nullarbor.

Once more on unfenced roads, passing signs warning of camels, cattle, ‘roos and emus, came and onto the Madura Pass, where the flat plain suddenly drops away towards the Great Australian Bight, offering an astounding view of the plain from above. It resembles the Serengeti, minus the herds of wildebeest.
Crossing back into South Australia at Bordertown, and stopping for fuel, the first wild dingoes of the trip were spotted – another wildlife box ticked.

They weren’t too wild though, as they were hanging around the roadhouse scrounging off passing travellers!
This was to be the last night in the bush, for tomorrow, it was Adelaide and the end of a very long long run.

The following day proved to be something of a culture shock! One minute riding through rolling sheep and wheat country and the next caught up in heavy traffic heading into the city on a three-lane freeway.

The Adelaide Adventure, around Australia on a Triumph Tiger was over. Feeling both elated but at the same time a little deflated, and with those mixed feelings chewing around inside, Colin & Geoff congratulated each other on making it all the way and on bikes running like clockwork throughout the journey.

A book detailing Colin & Geoff's antipodean exploits is planned - more news on this when it's published.
